Vespers, Sergei Rachmaninoff with Bach Vocal Artists

John V. Sinclair, conductor • Bach Vocal Artists

Step into a world of stillness, awe, and transcendent sound.

Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil—often called the Vespers—is one of the most profound choral works of the 20th century. Drawing on ancient Russian Orthodox chant and enriched by Rachmaninoff’s luminous harmonies, this a cappella masterpiece offers a moving journey of spiritual reflection and musical brilliance.

Sung in Church Slavonic and performed by a handpicked ensemble of professional voices from across the nation, this performance invites listeners to experience the sacred through sound alone. Let the timeless beauty of unaccompanied human voices transport you to a realm of peace, reverence, and quiet wonder.

Mozart and Salieri: Rimsky-Korsakov

Come see me perform the role of Salieri in Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Mozart and Salieri at the Timucua Arts Foundation produced by Musical Traditions.

Synopsis:

When a masterful composer gets inspired by a literary genius the result is Mozart and Salieri - a one-act opera composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1897 to a Russian libretto taken almost verbatim from Alexander Pushkin's 1830 verse drama of the same name. The story was widely popularized by Miloš Forman's 1984 film Amadeus.

The story follows the apocryphal legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart out of jealousy over the latter's music. Rimsky-Korsakov incorporated quotations from Mozart's Requiem and Don Giovanni into the score.

Four Lost Santas | Amahl and the Night Visitors

I’ll be joining Opera Orlando for this wonderful double bill as Santa Barry in a new work and King Balthazar in a timeless Christmass classic.

Opera Orlando presents the world premiere of Four Lost Santas, a comic Christmas Opera commissioned by Opera Orlando based on an original concept by Gabriel Preisser with music by Spicer Carr and a libretto by Spicer Carr and Rose Freeman. This fun, family-friendly piece is a lead-in to Menotti’s seasonal favorite Amahl and the Night Visitors, and it is the perfect antidote for the hustle and bustle of the season. Join a barbershop quartet of Santas who find themselves lost on their way to what should be their big break: SantaCon! They are thankfully rescued by Judy and Rudy, a mother and son who are running late to their community theater production of Amahl. When they can’t fix the Santas’ car, they all pile into the Mom’s car to get into town.

They arrive to utter chaos at the theater as the three Kings and Page have quit the production. Rudy is particularly disappointed, but the Santas save the day as they volunteer to sing the roles in Amahl, because of course they have sung them before. As the cast breathes a sigh of relief, the stage manager yells, “Places!” and then begins Amahl and the Night Visitors, a poignant story of a beautiful Christmas miracle.

This pairing is a perfect balance between the commercial and sacred side of the holidays, told by a fantastic cast in the intimate setting of the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater. Sing along to some of your favorite Christmas carols, and let this new Christmas tradition tug at your heartstrings.

Four Lost Santas/Amahl and the Night Visitors will be sung in English with English and Spanish supertitles and have a run time of approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.
